BEAT THE RED LIGHT - s/t {TNS} Crickey! This is some serious genre-blending, bludgeoningly-bilateral, crossover chaos! This 7-piece splice some seriously cutting metal riffs with deft, bass-led Ska-Punk while throwing down some funky beats into the mix to create something genuinely original. Both ‘The Luminus Way’ and ‘Send In The Clowns’ feature riffage that’s on par with early Metallica with guitar solos to match (not necessarily a good thing in my eyes) while ‘The Scene Is Under Attack’ adds a Fishbone groove to the barrage. Lyrically this is interesting stuff, well thought out with a lot of work (possibly too much work - simplify a bit fellas!) put into the arrangements. Vocally though, it doesn’t always hit the spot; phrasing sometimes failed to match the music and the delivery could certainly be snottier rather than screamier! If FIVE KNUCKLE beating the shit outta MAD CADDIES appeals, this could be for you. If you know the TNS sound, BEAT THE RED LIGHT fit well. (31.08.10)

BOOTSCRAPER - Country & Eastern {TNS} Debut album from this 7-piece ‘agro-folk’ band outta Leeds, UK. It’s a truly riotous affair of rabid acoustic guitars, flailing mandolins, smoking fiddles and pumping accordions. Yep, think THE POGUES played with the finesse of the WHISKY PRIESTS and given an entirely Eastern European raggle-taggle ho-down vibe. It’s very accomplished musically, multi-vocalled, freewheeling stuff with highlights being the tale of oil greed that is ‘There Will Be Blood’, ‘Gimme Some Time’ (which is one of a few that employs excellent countrified BYRDS arrangements but played via the stomp of BLUBBERRY HELLBELLIES!), ‘Never Satisfied’ and the Tom Waits-esque closer ‘Big Problemo’. I’m guessing these fellas are a riot live, creating a booze-sodden party atmosphere. The sleeve graphics represent the sounds well also, being light-hearted but stylish. If you realise Punk is more of an expression than a hairstyle or brand of sneaker (as it so often seems today), then this may well serve as a nice slice of energised variation in your record collection. Faintest Idea - Ignorance Is This album review from Big Cheese
Norfolk Skoi with upstarting agenda - 4/5
Based upon the three-cord chainsaw riffs, mean streets honed vocals and ailing bass intros, you'd be forgiven for thinking that this release from Norfolk four-piece Faintest Idea was anything but ska. But then, I supp...ose the horns are a dead giveaway. Dosing up ten tracks of brackish street skacore - the way Dicky Barrett used to do it - the record is refreshingly innovative and finds a unique genre balanced between the wrath of UK82 and the chirpiness of the 2 Tone era. Rowdy, anthemic and punctuated with trumpet blasts in excess, 'Ignorant Is This' is pure testosterone ska, perfect for those with a bit of bite in their skank.

Bootscraper - Country & Eastern album review from Big Cheese
Gypsy Punk outta Yorkshire - 4/5
It may be a little lazy to compare this Leeds crew with Gogol Bordello, but surely the tittle is enough to confirm that they're deliberately working in the sma musical area. But if they're working a now fairly familiar seam, the...re's no denying that Bootscraper (waht sort of name is that?) nail this gypsy punk think pretty good, also adding hints of swing to the heady mix. It's very impressive, and you'd never guess they were from Yorkshire. 'There Will Be Blood' shuffles along with menacing growly vocals, as does 'Past Lives of Saints', while 'Gimme Some Time' is more overtly country and then 'Then You're Hers' is an altogether more speedy affair. All good stuff.
Shane Baldwin, Big Cheese

Beat The Red Light
Beat The Red Light
TNS Records

We are a bit slow on this one to say the least, and with ample comparisons to Kid Dynamite and some hardcore ska akin to the mighty Voodoo Glow Skulls, Beat The Red Light are a enjoyable and original band. Opening track ‘Never A Dull moment’ has a 90 second instrumental intro before the scream vocals kick in reminding me of recently reviewed Broken Nose (another UK band). With great riffs and breakdowns and throaty vocals which can also actually sing too, this EP is really well produced. The horns are upbeat and driving which make you want to jump along to the songs. It’s rather dismissive to call BTRL a pure ska punk band as they are more diverse and experimental than that. My one big criticism though is the length of the songs (all over 4:30 minutes) and the opening track as mentioned and all subsequent songs have over extended instrumental intros. The heavy horns and gang vocals come through on second song ‘The Luminous Way’ whilst ‘The Scene Is Under Attack’ is much more skanking and less crusty or skacore while ‘White Collar Pride’ is less enjoyable and original; the final track ‘Send In The Clowns’ is another enjoyable original take on skacore. With overwhelming positive reviews to date it will be interesting to see what exactly happens to Beat The Red Light.
